Importance of Research and Clinical trials

Click on the video by A/Prof Harin Kuranajeewa, Director of Clinical Research to learn about the importance of clinical trials.

Clinical trials are important to ensure that new drugs are effective and safe in humans. Clinical trials provide evidence that the treatment being studied will work and they investigate what the side effects may be. They also explore what a safe and effective dose should be. This helps doctors decide if the new treatment is safer and more effective than any existing treatments. Clinical trials in humans can only be started after the treatment has been tested in the laboratory and in animals with positive results.

The Therapeutic Goods Australia (TGA) approves new medicines and devices in Australia. Clinical trials are needed before these treatments can be approved.
